Manheim Township Middle School decided to construct a new middle school to replace the existing one in order to provide innovative learning environments for students and further flexibility for future academic programs.
The design includes multiple academic wings to house 1,200 students, which are connected by the main commons and cafeteria. The building also includes a 600-capacity black-box theatre and a 600-capacity gymnasium.
The building is constructed of load-bearing masonry walls, steel joists, and steel-framed clerestory canopies. Structural features include long-span steel tube trusses, monumental stairs, custom-designed steel trusses and a long-span pedestrian steel-framed bridge hung from the roof structure above.
